Nurture Our Culture

Ladies and gentlemen,
Today is the commemoration festival of Language Day or “Hari Bahasa”, a day which particularly used to preserve and campaigning the importance of language. Language cannot be from culture, since language is a part of culture. Culture is an umbrella term which encompasses the social behavior and norms found in human societies, as well as the knowledge, beliefs, arts, laws, customs, capabilities and habits of the individuals in these groups. Humans acquire culture through the learning processes of enculturation and socialization, which is shown by the diversity of cultures across societies. Indonesia is one of the country that have a very unique diverse culture. Indonesia has around 300 ethnic group and 742 different language, and each ethnic group usually have their own culture. A lot of our culture has been known worldwide for its uniqueness and authenticity, such as Batik, Reog, Gamelan, Pendet dance, Saman dance, and folk song like Lagu Rasa Sayange and Macapat. This fact prove that Indonesian culture is really great.

Nowadays, we must feel that the advancement of technology and communication is very rapid. The reason for this is because the existence of Globalization. Globalization is the process of interaction and integration among people, companies, and government worldwide. Globalization has grown due to advances in transportation and communication technology. With the increased global interactions, it comes with the growth of international trade, ideas, and culture. Globalization is a double-edged knife. While globalization proved beneficial for us because it helps us spread and inform world about our culture, it is also the reason why there is a lot of foreign culture such as Kpop, foreign dressing style, foreign beliefs, and other kind of foreign culture is easily entering our own culture. And if we are not careful enough to educate our youth generation about Indonesian culture, it might be forgotten or vanish.

The most evident and easy-to-see example is the adoration of youth generation toward foreign song and music. Lot of young people love Western Pop, K-Pop, Chinese-Pop, etc. They also so proficient in doing K-Pop dance moves or dancing to those pop song. Actually, there’s nothing wrong with liking and learning foreign culture, because it can helps us to compete and adding qualities of ourselves in this era of globalization. The problem is if these youth generation study foreign culture but neglect our own culture. This will make Indonesian culture perish and vanish. That will be a shame since we have a very great culture and a very valuable ones.

But, the thing is that we cannot stop the cultural flow from foreign countries. The cultural contents will come through Social media, tv channel, streaming application, etcetera. So, rather than blocking the foreign culture, we should do acculturation and education toward the youngster. Blocking the culture only can be applied by blocking the communication platform, and it can provide harm to societies as hindering the growth of society because it cannot interact with ‘outside’, it can also repress the freedom of speech and freedom of discovering new things. Communicating with the ‘outside’ world, if the youngster is equipped with the right understanding of natio loyalty “Cinta tanah air” and proper education about our nation, it will be beneficial. They can improve themselves on inernational intercommunication so they could compete at international level but still having nationality roots and always nurturing their own culture as Indonesian. There is also chances that they can introduce our culture better to them since the youngster understand foreign culture so they can communicate and presenting the culture well with foreign people.

We should emphasize that acculturation does not mean changing our ancestor’s heritage drastically. Instead, Acculturation is merging some element in cultures so we have culture that fit more with our recent norm and value without changing the ‘roots’ or the ‘essence’ of our culture. For example, Kecak dance was a holy dance for certain situation or event. But in the modern day those kind of event become more rare. So to prevent the dance from being forgotten and to make the dance familiar with society and more beneficial, it get modified and acculturated with modern norm and can be performed in regular schedule without certain event. And other than acculturation, we should try to introuce our culture to the world through promotion. And I personally think that Indonesian government is already working on this promotion. For instance we frequently see ‘’Pesona Indonesia’’ or ‘’Wonderful Indonesia’’ Campaign. ‘’Pesona Indonesia’’ or ‘’Wonderful Indonesia” is a program to improve Indonesia’s tourism and cultural promotion. They pake advertisement on internet, on bus, doing cultural showcase, cultural exchange, etcetera. This is good to nurture our culture since more people will acknowledge and appreciate Indonesian culture. This will also bring good reputation on Indonesian culture worldwide.

In conclusion, globalization is a certain thing that have both harm and benefit. It is depending on us on how we act about it, whether we are going to let it be or are we going to preserve our culture. We have some alternatives to overcome the problem regarding globalization, which is through education, acculturation, and promotion. If we can apply those alternatives well, we are positive that Indonesia can nurture its culture and survive in this globalization era.
